2021 HELPING HAITI EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS
In 2010, Synergy Arts Foundation raised funds for a colony of Haitian artists profoundly impacted by that earthquake. It is our hope to raise funds specifically for families in the south, the epicenter area of the recent August 14 quake, further impacted by the Tropical Storm Grace, and not to mention the ongoing Covid pandemic!
According to the latest UN food security data, 980,000 Haitians in the four districts most affected by the August 14 earthquake are now living in the streets with acute food insecurity. Please listen to a mother, an elementary teacher in Les Cayes, who takes care of her two daughters (5 and 7), her husband and her mother.. They became homeless when their house was flattened. Please view the video of the Yanick Family HERE.
SYNERGY ASSISTS ARTISTS IN PUERTO RICO
July 14, 2018
Thanks to Craft Emergency Relief Fund (CERF+), Synergy Arts Foundation has connected with two elderly artists in Puerto Rico whose studios were demolished in the recent hurricane. Synergy will granting them some funds to rebuild their studios and Casa Candina.
Susana Espinosa, born in Argentina in 1933, graduated in 1953 from the Academia de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires and worked in a ceramics factory until she opened her own studio in 1958. She lived and worked in Trinidad from 1961 to 1968 when she relocated to Puerto Rico. Since 1989 she has belonged to the International Academy of Ceramics, and her work has won medals and honorable mentions at many international events. In 2003, Espinosa was selected to produce her project Tower Mural for the Public Art Project of Puerto Rico.
Bernardo Hogan, also born in Argentina in 1921, is self-taught in ceramics. He moved to Puerto Rico in 1968, after having lived in Trinidad. In 1980, he and Susana opened a ceramics studio with Isabel Rivera. In 1980, along with Toni Hambleton, Jaime Suárez, they founded Casa Candina, which he directed; he has also worked in the Ceramics Studio of the Art Students League of San Juan. Since 1988 he has been co-organizer of the Casa Candina Prize. They have collaborated on several public projects, among them the murals at the Caribe Hilton Hotel and at Bacardí Distillery.
Supporting artists like these is in perfect alignment with Synergy’s mission. In the past, Synergy has assisted artists in Haiti, New Orleans, Nepal and Peru after horrific natural disasters. If you wish to contribute, please visit http://www.synergyarts.org/donate.html

SYNERGY PARTNERS TO PILOT A PROGRAM WITH YOUNG AUTISTIC ARTISTS Synergy Arts Foundation is collaborating with Andrea Moriarty, author of Radical Inclusion, and Revision Creative Arts Program, an organization providing access to art, culture, and social practices to people with developmental disabilities.
The project is spearheaded by Moriarty to illustrate the call to action for integrated communities, cited in her recent book, Radical Inclusion: What I Learned About Risk, Humility, and Kindness from My Son with Autism.
Six professional artists were carefully selected because of their experience with this population and their art genres. Each artist with autism was paired with a professional artist working in a similar genre and medium. Each pair will collaborate on an artwork that celebrates the theme of “community” as a stepping stone for a collective exchange of ideas and experiences.
The ultimate goal of the project is to provide opportunities for both professional and autistic artists to encourage mutual learning by recognizing the amazing narratives that are produced when different worlds meet to speak the same language.
The resulting collaborative works together with one original artwork from each participant will tour San Diego County from August this year through the end of 2020. The Radical Inclusion Traveling Art Exhibition will be on display at the Sophie’s Gallery Kensington, Foundry Gallery in Carlsbad, Culture Brewery in Encinitas, Revision in San Diego, and Lux Art Institute in Encinitas. All works will be for sale.

LONGTIME BUSKER IN THE HOUSE (Reader November 17)
Lena Evans isn’t done playing the street — she’s done living thereBy Ken Leighton, Nov. 1, 2017
Homelessness tormented singer/songwriter Lena Evans for much of the past two decades.“I grew up in San Diego. I’ve been homeless on and off since I was 14 by simple choices and mistakes I made in my life,” says Evans. The cycle “...started with running away from home. Drugs were a part of it.”
Evans, 35, says she started busking in 1997. “I’d sing show tunes and songs I heard on the radio and songs I’d make up.” She also busked in O.B., which she calls bipolar. “There are some really nice people in O.B. But if you’re homeless or you’re not part of the O.B. surf and hate clique, people can be really mean. I’m a sensitive person and when I sing a song that I wrote and someone yells, ‘Shut up, troll,’ it makes me not want to sing there anymore.”
She said after Medi-Cal helped repair her mouth that had been ravaged from years of drug abuse, her life changed. “As soon as I got my teeth fixed I was hired at Ace Parking. We’ve been in a house now for three and a half years.” She hasn’t busked for six months. “At this point I do it just to see friends I haven’t seen in a long time.”
Evans appears Friday for the CD release of her second album, Standing Tall. Like her first, it was funded entirely by a group named Synergy.
“I was playing the open mic at Winstons and Jefferson [Jay, the host] pulled me aside and told me there was an organization that may help me produce my album.... We eventually drove up to Solana Beach and I played for a bunch of fancy dressed people on these bleachers in a park.”
Synergy Arts Foundation underwrote the recording and manufacture of her first album, Life Is Good, which Evans sold at gigs for $10.
Synergy cofounder Naomi Nussbaum says the group helps out artists in need with grants of between $1000 and $3000. “She’s really come a long way,” says Nussbaum of Evans. “We also helped [the late] sax player Daniel Jackson with dental work and [metal band] Eucharyst with their tour. We helped [deceased blues singer] Candye Kane for many years.”
Lena Evans appears with Jimmy & Enrique and Hugh Gaskins, Friday, November 3, at the “Acoustic Evenings” series at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library in La Jolla.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SYNERGY ARTS ORGANIZATION SUPPORTS ART PROGRAMMING AT VISTA HILL
Contact: Naomi Nussbaum [email protected]
Synergy Arts Foundation is excited to be funding an arts program at Vista Hill’s ParentCare Family Recovery Center*. This organization has been helping “high-risk” families break the cycle of child abuse, neglect, substance abuse and domestic violence for over 26 years. By providing drug rehabilitation, parenting skills classes and much more, ParentCare provides families the opportunity to make critical lifestyle changes and create a safe, nurturing home environment for their children.
The primary goal of the ParentCare art program is to provide participants a creative and stimulating opportunity to explore artistic experience and expression. The ParentCare population is primarily mothers and mothers-to-be (18-40) who are in recovery from drug or alcohol addiction, many of whom have come out of Fostercare and some are homeless. Some mothers bring their infants to class while older children are encouraged to participate. The art instructor, Pam Palmer-Lowe, is a professional interior designer with a background in applied design and management, who has generously been volunteering at ParentCare for over 18 months. She plans to include diverse mediums for these classes with an emphasis on creating “functional” art objects such as quilted pillows, fabric dolls, wooden jewelry and picture frames, holiday ornaments, special occasion cards and much more.
Primary benefits of the art project are to enhance self-confidence, focus and patience and to explore creativity and self expression through different art mediums. Simultaneously, the art classes provide a safe environment in which to relax, have fun and promote building a sense of community through sharing creative ideas and solutions.
*ParentCare is partially funded by the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency.

SYNERGY ARTS FOUNDATION FUNDS PHOTOGRAPHY PROJECT AT BAJA ORPHANAGE
Contact: Naomi Nussbaum [email protected]
Synergy Arts Foundation is funding an arts educational project with twenty children between the ages of 8 and 17, at Rancho de los Ninos, one of the largest orphanages in Baja. The instructor, Elidé Malagamba, a local Baja photographer, will be teaching these children how to use a 35 mm camera, and how to compose and frame photographs. Classes will be held every Saturday for a month, starting mid March, 2017, and students will be motivated to explore photography and experiment with their cameras throughout the week. Elidé will review each image taken by each student each week and provide constructive feedback.
The objective of this project is to encourage an in-depth knowledge of photography, provide students with much needed arts education, and stimulate their creativity. It is our hope that by the end of the project, each student will have learned not only about composing and framing photographs but also about themselves and their own creative process.
Once the project is complete, the instructor will select the best four photos of each student to be printed into postcards. We plan to mount exhibitions of these both in Ensenada and San Diego.
